Biographical Statement

Vermeersch is a professor of political science at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and a research fellow at the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research (FWO). His research interests are in ethnic mobilization, minority politics, and Europeanization in Eastern Europe. He is the author of the book The Romani Movement: Minority Politics and Ethnic Mobilization in Contemporary Central Europe (2006). He has also published in Communist and Post-Communist Studies, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Ethnic and Racial Studies, and other academic journals. He is currently working on a project that examines connections between democratization and nationalist mobilization in contemporary Poland. He will be in residence at CES from August of 2007 through July of 2008.
