Biographical Statement

Van Ginderachter is a postdoctoral fellow of the Research FoundationñFlanders in the department of modern and contemporary history at Ghent University (Belgium), from which he received his PhD in 2005. He has published books and articles on social democracy and national identity, the civic-ethnic dichotomy in nationalism studies, gender and nationalism, and history from below. He is currently working on two related projects: "Nation-Building from Below: A Social History of National Identity in Belgium (1780ñ1914)" and "The Popular Appropriation of Nationhood in the Long Nineteenth Century: A Transnational Approach to National Identity Construction in ‘Ordinary Writings’ of Western European Border Regions." Van Ginderachter will be in residence at CES from March to July of 2008.
