Biographical Statement

Planert is an associate professor of modern history at the University of Tübingen, Germany, specializing in the cultural history of west and central Europe. Her research interests include the relationships between gender and nationalism, the transformation period around 1800, and the popularization of scientific knowledge. After receiving her PhD for a thesis on antifeminism and anti-Semitism in early-twentieth-century Germany, she joined the University of Tübingenís Collaborative Research Center on "War and Society in Modern History." Assistant professor and project coordinator since 2001, she wrote her second book on everyday experiences during the wars of the French Revolution and Napoleon. Currently working on the comparative history of eugenics, she will be in residence at CES from late August through October of 2007.
