Biographical Statement

Czaplicka has taught in Hamburg, Germany, at Harvard, and at Humboldt University in Berlin. His past publications have focused on the pictorial imagery of Berlin, Americanism in Germany, the art of exile artists, and commemorative practices in Germany and Central Europe. One of his current projects, “Divided Cities/ Divided Histories,” compares the historical imagery of five cities in Central Europe: Berlin, Gdansk, Lviv, Riga, and Vilnius. He is also preparing a monograph on the concept of cultural landscape. In 2003, he edited two collections of essays, one on the city of Lviv (2005), and a second on composing urban history (2004). He has recently edited a collection on urban history and European integration.
