Biographical Statement

Szporluk is Mykhailo S. Hrushevs’kyi Professor of Ukrainian History emeritus at Harvard and professor emeritus of history at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His research focuses on modern Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish history, and on Marxism and nationalism in Eastern Europe. Szporluk’s conversation with Andrzej Nowak, “Was Poland an Empire?” (2004) appeared in Russian translation in Ab imperio (No.1, 2007). Szporluk’s “The Making of Modern Ukraine” (2004) was reprinted in A Laboratory of Transnational History: Ukraine and Recent Ukrainian Historiography (edited by G. Kasianov and P. Ther, 2009). His article “Mapping Ukraine: From Identity Space to Decision Space” appeared in Il mestiere di storico (May 2009).
