Biographical Statement
Skocpol is Victor S. Thomas Professor of Government and Sociology. Skocpol’s first book, States and Social Revolutions (1979), won two major scholarly awards. In 1985, she co-edited the influential collection Bringing the State Back In (1985). For the last fifteen years, her research has focused on US politics. Skocpol’s Protecting Soldiers and Mothers: The Political Origins of Social Policy in the United States (1992), won five scholarly awards. Her recent books focus on civic engagement in America and on the transformation of the US government and public policies. She is currently working on the development of US higher education and on the fate of the Obama Administration’s efforts to change the focus of US domestic public policies.
