Biographical Statement
Putnam is the Peter and Isabel Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard. Winner of the 2006 Skytte prize for his work on social capital, he has authored or co-authored twelve books and more than thirty scholarly articles published in twenty languages including Better Together: Restoring the American Community (2003), Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community (2000), Making Democracy Work: Civic Traditions in Modern Italy (with R. Leonardi and R. Nanetti, 1993), Double-Edged Diplomacy: International Bargaining and Domestic Politics (1993), Hanging Together: The Seven-Power Summits (1984) and Comparative Study of Political Elites (1976). Putnam served on the staff of the National Security Council and as president of the American Political Science Association. He is a member of the National Academy of Science. He has served as chair of the department of government and dean of the Harvard Kennedy School.
