Biographical Statement

McDonald is Smith Professor of French Language and Literature in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and professor of comparative literature at Harvard. Her research and teaching focus on eighteenth- and twentieth-century French thought. Shealso publishes in the areas of ethics, feminist theory, and the arts. Publications include The Extravagant Shepherd (1973, 2007); The Dialogue of Writing (1985), Dispositions7 (1986), and The Proustian Fabric (1991). She edited The Ear of the Other (1988) and co-edited Transformations: The Languages of Culture and Personhood after Theory (1994). Her most recent publications are Images of Congo (2005) and Painting My World (2009). Forthcoming are Rousseau and Freedom (edited with S. Hoffmann, 2010), and French Literary History: A Global Approach (edited with S. Suleiman, 2010).
