Biographical Statement

Lewis is John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard and teaches in the history department. Her book, The Boundaries of the Republic: Migrant Rights and the Limits of Universalism in France, 1918-1940 (2007), was named co-winner of the 2008 J. Willard Hurst Prize for the best book in socio-legal history, awarded by the Law and Society Association. A French translation of the book will be published in 2010. An article entitled "Geographies of Power: The Tunisian Civic Order, Jurisdictional Politics, and Imperial Rivalry in the Mediterranean, 1881-1935," outlining her current book project, appeared in the Journal of Modern History in December 2008. Another article on that project is forthcoming from Past & Present.
