Biographical Statement

Puhle is Professor emeritus of politicalscience at Goethe Universität Frankfurt. He has also taughtat the universities of Münster, Bielefeld, Cornell, Oxford,Stanford, Tel Aviv, Universidad de Chile, FLACSO BuenosAires, and the Instituto Juan March Madrid. Puhle hasbeen a Kennedy Fellow at Harvard. He has published inthe fields of comparative social and political history ofthe Western world, comparative politics, political parties,pressure groups and social movements, democratization,and nationalism. His latest books include: The Politicsof Democratic Consolidation (1995), Von der Diktaturzur Demokratie (1999), Defekte Demokratie (2003), andDemocracy, Intermediation and Voting on Four Continents(2007). His current research focuses on the differenttrajectories of modernization in various parts of the world.
