Claus Offe

Offe teaches Political Sociology at the Hertie School ofGovernance. He completed his PhD at the Universityof Frankfurt and his Habilitation at the University ofKonstanz. In Germany, he has held chairs for PoliticalScience and Political Sociology at the Universities ofBielefeld and Bremen, as well as at the Humboldt-University of Berlin. He has worked as fellow and visitingprofessor at, among others, the Institutes for AdvancedStudy at Stanford, Princeton, and the Australian NationalUniversity, the University of California at Berkeley andthe New School University, New York. Offe has madesubstantive contributions to understanding the relationshipsbetween democracy and capitalism. His recent workhas focused on economies and states in transition todemocracy.
