Biographical Statement
Frader is professor and chair of the department of history at Northeastern University, and a specialist on the intersections of gender, labor, and social policy in nineteenth-century and twentieth-century France. Among her publications are Gender and Class in Modern Europe (edited with S. Rose, 1996) and Race in France: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Politics of Difference (edited with H. Chapman, 2004). Her most recent book is Breadwinners and Citizens: Gender in the Making of the French Social Model (2008). She is currently working on a history of European Union gender equality policies since 1957. Frader is co-chair of the Seminar on French Politics, Culture, and Society and also the Gender, Politics, and Society Study Group at CES.
