Biographical Statement

Shovlin is associate professor of history at New York versity, where he teaches eighteenth- and nineteenth- century European cultural and political history. He is the author of The Political Economy of Virtue: Luxury, Patriotism, and the Origins of the French Revolution (2006), along with articles in Eighteenth-Century Studies, French Historical Studies, and the Journal of Modern History. He is currently working on a book that reexamines the character of international relations in old regime Europe by exploring the more cooperative dimensions of the Franco-British relationship. He will be in residence at CES for the 2009-2010 academic year.
