Kristin Poling

Poling studies the intellectual and cultural history of the city in modern Europe. Her dissertation, entitled “The Inner Frontier: Opening Germany’s Urban Borders in the Long Nineteenth Century,” examines the removal of city walls and other markers of the urban edge in German cities and tracks the emergence of the concepts of the urban frontier and the suburban colony in the nineteenth century. Poling spent 2006–2007 researching her dissertation in cities across Germany, with support from a CES fellowship.
