Biographical Statement
Karch is studying nationalism in the German-Polish borderlands from 1870-1960, with specific focus on local resistance to German and Polish nationalization efforts in Upper Silesia. His research interests include the role of Catholicism in the modern state, national indifference in the borderlands and regional movements within Central and Eastern Europe. Karch completed a year of research in Germany and Poland in 2007-2008 and will be in residence at CES in 2008-2009.
