Biographical Statement
Friedland is an historian of early modern and revolutionary France. He is in the final stages of completing a book on the theory and practice of capital punishment in France, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies. During his tenure at CES, he will be finishing a book on the October Days of the French Revolution as well as beginning work on a new project that will explore the relationship between state sovereignty and human rights.
