Biographical Statement
In 2009–2010 Scribner is the principal investigator on a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. For this project she is organizing a public culture collaboration between students at the City University of New York and the Swiss-French visual artist Thomas Hirschhorn. Scribner’s current scholarship examines representations of German left-wing militancy from the 1970s to the present. She has held teaching and research positions atColumbia University, the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut- NRW, the University of Oxford, and MIT where she was named the Class of 1954 Career Development Professor in 2005. Scribner’s first book, Requiem for Communism (2003), analyzes the aesthetic response to the collapse of communism in Europe. Her research has appeared in a range of journals and books, including Critical Inquiry, the New Left Review and Grey Room.
