Biographical Statement
Manuel’s research interests address questions related to comparative democratization, with regional specialization on Portugal, and on the relationship between religion and politics. Manuel has authored or co-authored five books and numerous articles, and is currently working on a comparative study of faith-culture relations in Portugal and in the Portuguese-speaking world. Manuel is a member of the National Screening Panel for the Graduate Fulbright Competition for the Spain and Portugal program, co-founder of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, and a research fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University. Manuel co-chaired the IberianStudies Group at CES from 1998–2004.
