Biographical Statement
Burgard is a professor of German at Harvard, where he teaches courses on early modern culture, German and Austrian literature and art in the early twentieth century, the Baroque, Goethe, Nietzsche, and Freud. He is the author of Idioms of Uncertainty: Goethe and the Essay and has recently completed a study entitled Figures of Excess: Toward an Aesthetic of the Baroque. He has published essays on German literature and intellectual history of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and twentieth centuries, on twentieth-century drama, and on both Italian Baroque and contemporary art. In addition, he has edited two collections of essays, Nietzsche and the Feminine and Barock: Neue Sichtweisen einer Epoche.
