Biographical Information
Silver is an associate professor of sociology and urban studies at Brown University. She received her PhD in sociology from Columbia University and has held visiting appointments and fellowships in Europe at the Universities of Sussex and Bristol, Université de Lille I, INSEE, INED, the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg, and Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin. She has been a consultant for the International Labour Office, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and the Brookings Institution on issues of social exclusion, poverty, insecurity, and discrimination in Europe. She is currently studying programs to combat social exclusion, especially in France and Germany, and, with support from the DAAD, is researching integration efforts in two neighborhoods of Berlin. She recently edited and contributed to a special issue of German Politics and Society (Winter 2007) on “Social Integration in the ‘New’ Berlin.” Silver is co-chair of the Exclusion and Inclusion in an Expanded Europe Study Group.
