Biographical Information

Jacques E. C. Hymans is Assistant Professor in the Department of Government at Smith College. Hymans' research focuses on international relations and foreign policy, with an emphasis on the growth and impact of collective identities in Europe and beyond. His book The Psychology of Nuclear Proliferation: Identity, Emotions, and Foreign Policy (Cambridge University Press, 2006) received the 2007 Alexander L. George Best Book Award from the International Society of Political Psychology. In addition to proliferation, Hymans also has an active research program on currency iconography. He has held residential fellowships at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, the East Asia Institute in Seoul, the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford, the Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard, and the Mershon Center at Ohio State. He received his Ph.D. from the Harvard University Department of Government in 2001.
