Biographical Information
Albert has taught modern Jewish history at Harvard, Brown University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of New South Wales, and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Her research interests include nineteenth- and twentieth-century French Jewish intellectual, social, and institutional history, and she is the author of The Modernization of French Jewry: Consistory and Community in Nineteenth-century France (1977) and The Integration of French Jews since the Revolution (forthcoming). She is currently writing about the debate in mid-nineteenth-century France about the idea of restoring Jews to Palestine and the forces that gave rise to Zionism in the decades preceding the Zionist movement. Albert is co-chair of the Jews in Modern Europe Study Group.
