Undergraduate Grant Descriptions
Summer Travel for Thesis Research Grants
Purpose: Undergraduate Summer Travel Grants fund
summer research in Europe for juniors in the Harvard Faculty of Arts
and Sciences preparing senior theses on political, historical, economic,
social, cultural, and intellectual trends in modern or contemporary
Europe. Grants must be used for research abroad during the summer
break.
Award: The maximum award is $5,000. In some cases,
funding will be shared with other grant programs or Centers. Funding
is provided by the Krupp Foundation and by the Minda de Gunzburg
Center for European Studies.
Deadline: February 17, 2012. Students must apply via the Harvard University Common Application for Research and Travel (CARAT). Completed grant applications will be accepted on Friday, February 17, 2012, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in CGIS South, Room S-030, 1730 Cambridge Street. Please follow the CARAT instructions carefully as they include all requirements and supplemental materials and submission instructions. Note that CES requires only one letter of recommendation, and will allow proposals up to five pages in length.
Note: Many students apply to multiple Centers and
grant programs. Centers will often share funding of projects, but
please note that the total amount awarded will not exceed the amount
requested or the maximum grant of the Center. Since grants typically do not cover 100% of costs associated with a research trip, applicants are expected to seek additional funding sources. Applicants should browse the Harvard College Funding Sources Database to identify other options. A Harvard PIN is required. Please note that thesis research projects are not eligible for David Rockefeller International Experience Grants.
Grant Restrictions: Grants may not be used for language study, for
research expenses in Cambridge, for travel within the US, for special
equipment such as tape recorders, or for fees for transcription or
translation. Students are expected to review discount student travel
resources for housing and airfare, and should be aware that these book
quickly and prices may change. Applicants will not be permitted to
update their budget after it has been submitted.
Ariadne Undergraduate Summer Travel Grants to Greece
Purpose: Ariadne Undergraduate Summer Travel Grants

and intellectual trends in modern or contemporary Greece.

by a gift from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Center
for European Studies. Requirements and restrictions are the same as the general CES Summer Travel Thesis Research Grant, described above.

Note that CES requires only one letter of recommendation, and will allow proposals up to five pages in length.
